Instead of following a group of hapless teens, the camera lingers on the resurrected, undead Johnny — a hulking, masked figure inspired by classic horror archetypes — as he methodically stalks the Ontario wilderness. The film leans into long takes, ambient sound, and minimal dialogue, creating an almost meditative, dread-soaked atmosphere reminiscent of arthouse cinema more than traditional gore-fests.
For long stretches, nothing "happens." We simply watch Johnny walk. It is calm, almost hypnotic. Then, without warning, the film erupts into some of the most graphic and prolonged kill scenes ever committed to celluloid. One death scene, in particular, became a viral talking point. Without giving away too many spoilers, Nash has said that the film's starting point was a specific image: Johnny gets shot, falls to the ground, and then slowly gets back up, picks up an axe, and throws it. The scene lingers on him as we hear the axe land in the distance, followed by the sound of something hitting the ground.
